Why am I mentioning exterior painting in the middle of February? Our schedule for exterior painting projects is already filling up, as homeowners throughout the North Shore recruit WORKS to paint their homes this spring and summer. They respect us for our commitment to keeping their homes structurally sound as well as beautiful.

Exterior Painting for a Century Old Home

For example, last year, new homeowners hired us to repaint their three-story home that has stood in Manchester-by-the-Sea for more than 100 years. We began work at the end of July and finished in mid-August—“painting” covers a lot more than opening a can of paint and wielding a brush or roller. Here are some of the tasks we completed even before we began painting:

  1. Set up plastic in accordance with regulatory guidelines for lead paint.

  2. Took off shutters and labeled them (for exact replacement after painting).
  3. Wet down trim and siding, to scrub off dirt and remove loose paint.
  4. Discovered rot, broken clapboards and damaged wood gutter.
  5. Primed with a special primer that prevents further peeling.
  6. Continued scraping, caulking and priming.
  7. Replaced rotting fascia and removed gutter that will be replaced with aluminum.
  8. Handled rot repairs.
  9. Continued scraping, caulking and priming.

Finally, we began painting the exterior, including the foundation. But our job still didn’t end there. We repaired, scraped, primed and painted the shutters. We were asked by the homeowner to repair and paint the exterior doors, including the thresholds, and to repair the chimney. We examined the whole job for touchups. And only when we were completely satisfied did we consider the “exterior painting project” done.
